We spent last in Harrogate and then set off for Skipton this morning. Skipton Castle is a Medieval Castle, one the the best preserved in England. It is about 900 years old. It is amazing to see all the rooms within the walls. Almost right beside the castle is the Parish Church, which is beautiful, with an imposing Clock Tower. We drove from Skipton through the Yorkshire Dales and the beautiful rolling countryside. This is the area where the series "All Creatures great and Small"is based. We chose once again to take the snaller roads, rather than the highways, it took a little longer, but it was well worth it. The drive was a bit challenging as it twists and turns and at times the road is really only wide enough for 1 car. We arrived at Lake Windemee, where we crossed the river by ferry, which tok abiut 10mins and headed up the road to Hill Top Farm, which is Beatrix Potters Cottage. We arrived at about 3.15 in plenty of time to see it, so we thought. We were not aware that the entry to the cottage is timed entry, and they only have a certain number of tickets a day. Luckily, we got the last 2 tickets, but had to wait until 4.10......by this time it was raining quite steadily again. Oh well, off to the shop while we waited. The cottage has been kept as it was when she died, as was her wish. Ot os a beautiful cosy cottage with lots of Beatrix's personal things inside...including some embriodery and a quilt. There is even a rejection letter from a publisher, how incredible is that!!!!
By the time we finished at Hill Top Cottage it was after 5pm, much later that we expected. We drove to Cockermouth, but all the accommodation appeared to be already taken, so we drove on to Carlisle where we are spending the night. More photos tomorrow

  1. I have heard that Beatrix Potter's Cottage is something worth seeing. Wouldn't you be *#!@^* off if you were that publisher that rejected her!!!
Glad to hear you have accomodation......can just imagine the panic (Mum) when there was none at Cockermouth!!!!!

  2. Oh my God! Are you just cheshire cat grinning when you add to you blog or what!??? I mean, if it weren't enough that you did all the stuff in Rome (though it was more a reminiscence than anything else), then Paris (my sister-in-law would love to go back I'm sure and I would like to go full stop!) Then England - The Shadows! Are You Kidding????? Lucky so and so's!! Beatrix Potter!! Sheesh, next you'll be saying you ran into Coleridge (obviously highly unlikely!!!! ;)) If something like that happens...ah go ahead, milk it for all it's worth!! Am loving your updates and photos. I hope, John, you are enjoying the cathedrals and such!!! I also hope you had a lovely cleansing Easter (in the traditional sense also) and are always left wanting!! (The best way to experience something, never 'til you're sick of it). Love to you both!!

  3. Lucky you to get the last 2 tickets to see Hilltop farm for the day. Did you get to wander around the village while you were waiting or was it too wet? Beatrix's mother was a very unpleasant women by all accounts and B kept a diary in a code of her own devising. Her brother was married for 7 years before he was brave enough to tell his parents- his wife was only a shop assistant's daughter, or something- can't remember now- I did read her diaries once -they were decoded by some clever clogs in the nineteen fifties. Anyway, lucky you. I bet not finding a place to stay sent the anxiety level soaring. Will read all this to the Ingleburnites or maybe take the laptop out for them to see the pictures too XXXX
