Sunday 12th May 2024 - Bruges

We left our apartment around 11.30am and caught the No 52 Bus, which then connected to a No 3 Tram (just like a suburban train) to Brussels Midi, where we caught the train to Bruges @ 12.04pm.  The train trip was approximately 1 hour and we were advised by the Tourist information to get the No 1 or 2 Shuttle bus to the centre of the city.  However, the buses were mixed up, as there had been a marathon earlier in the day, and they weren't on the usual routes.

We ended seeing a lot of the surrounding area before eventually getting to the centre of the city.  By this time we were hungry and thirsty, so we found a lovely little outside restaurant for lunch.

Our reason for visiting Bruges, was that it is a Medieval Weaving City, that had not been bombed or destroyed in anyway in either of the World Wars.

From here we walked towards the central square, and on the way came across this litlle merry go round.

We continued on to the central square which was very vibrant, with music

and people everywhere, lots of horse drawn carriages doing town tours

We continued on towards the canal, where we took a canal trip of the city which took around 45 minutes, and gave us a different view of the city.

There are many bars and restaurants that face onto the canal where people sit eating and drinking as the boats go by.

There is particularly low bridge with only a couple of inches headroom

After the canal boat tour we had a cup of tea in very elegant Tea Shop/Restaurant, which appeared to be more for the locals (who had lots of money) than tourists, before making our way back to the shuttle bus to Bruges Station and catching the train back to Brussels Centraal, and then the No 52 bus back to the apartment, where we had cheese on toast for a late diner :)
