Portsmouth & Brighton 6.11.2012

We decided to have a reasonably easy day today and drive to Portsmouth to visit the Historic Dockyard. What an interesting place !! A visit to the Mary Rose Museum, and then for a guided tour of HMS Victory, the oldest warship in the world. HMS Victory was the flagship of the British Navy that Admiral Nelson commanded at the Battle of Trafalgar. During this battle he was wounded whilst on deck and later died. His last request was that he wasn't buried at sea, so his body was preserved in alcohol for 4 mths and he was then buried at St Paul's Cathedral. Next was a 45 min boat ride around the Portsmouth Harbour.
We then decided to drive to Brighton where we visited the Royal Pavillion, which was built in 1787 as a seaside retreat for George, The Prince of Wales. It is most decadent and unusual building, but nethertheless very interesting. Unfortunately, by the time we had finished the tour of the Royal Pavillion the pier was closed. We started back toward Lyndhurst and due to the time got caught in traffic. We arrived back at the Stag Hotel around 7pm - so much for an easy day !!!
