Saturday 20th August, 2022

This morning we decided to go to Bradford on Avon which is about 15 mins drive from where we are staying.  Driving into the village was quite steep, and took a little time as often it was single lane only.

After finding a parking spot - which isn't easy in these villages, we wandered through a lovely park beside the Avon River.

We found a lovely old Tea Shop, and I mean really old, called the Bridge Tea Shop.

It was originally built in 1502, but the 2nd floor addition is reasonably new, it was done in 1675.  The waitresses were all dressed in period costume, black long dresses, with white caps and aprons.

There were some lovely blue and white pottery, which I told the waitress I would love to take home.

We enjoyed a traditional Cream Tea, otherwise know as a Devonshire
Tea

The Trinity Church was built in 1150

The was a sign to a Saxon Church, which was built in the 8th Century.  It is very small and very plain

Bradford on Avon is a very pretty village to visit, and would highly recommend it

Next, we drove to Malmesbury to visit the Abbey which dates to 656 and was founded as a Benedictine Monastry.  The town of Malmesbury grew around the Abbey and was made a buhr by Alfred the Great.  King Ethelstan, Alfred the Greats Grandson, who was the first King of All England was buried here in AD941

The Market Cross, not far from the Abbey, is Grade 1 listed and thought to date back to 1490.

On leaving Malmesbury, we drove to Castle Comb, but due to the traffic both cars and people we just drove through the village.  It is supposed to be the prettiest village in the Cotswolds, and it is definitely pretty, but not a place I would like to live, due to the number of tourists.
